BURLINGTON, N.C. – Hole 17 at Alamance Country Club was no match for Longwood men's golf.

Four Lancers eagled the 506-yard par-five, and the other birdied the hole to highlight a monster second round at the Elon Phoenix Invitational that propelled Longwood into a tie for fifth place at the 13-team tournament.

In their first two turns on hole 17 Monday, the Lancers racked up all four of their tournament-leading four eagles and three of their 31 birdies to orchestrate a surge five spots up the tournament leaderboard. The quartet of Ryan Hammer, Scott Jordan, Christian Michael and Nick Rakes all three-shotted their second-round try on 17, with Hammer and Michael both birdeying their first opportunity on 17 in round one.

Longwood's five-spot climb was the biggest by any team in round two of the two-day tournament and puts the Lancers behind only Elon's A and B teams, Appalachian State and Radford on the team leaderboard. Longwood also came in ahead of Big South peers Gardner-Webb, North Carolina and Presbyterian and currently sits just three spots away from a top-three spot with fourth-place Radford minus-6 and third-place Elon B minus-7.

"Today was definitely a tale of two rounds," said Longwood head coach Kevin Fillman. "We just couldn't get anything going this morning. Just about every time we got it headed the right direction, we'd do something to completely halt our momentum. We make a few double bogeys on a golf course where doubles really can't be made. We fought hard, but it's difficult to put up low scores that way.

"Then suddenly, things started to click for us in the afternoon round. It was almost like we hit the reset button once the morning round was over. Obviously, Nick played a very good second round. We needed somebody to go low to cover some damage from the first round, and Nick was able to do so. Ryan was steady all afternoon and pretty much just took advantage of the opportunities he gave himself. Christian's round was probably the key one for us. He battled his butt off after some early bad luck and put a number up that we needed to help us climb the board. We're going to have to take that same aggressive mindset out there with us tomorrow and see if we can post another low one."

Sparking that effort was the sophomore Rakes, whose eagle was part of a bounce-back second round in which the he rallied from a two-over 71 in the first round to fire a five-under 66 in his second turn. Longwood's team leader this fall with a 71.11 stroke average, he kept up that trend Monday as Longwood's top individual finisher with a 73-66—139 (-3) that has him currently tied for 17th.

Rakes was one of three Lancers to shoot under par in round two, followed by Hammer who finished 72-69—141 (-1) for the day and Michael, who carded a 74-69—143 (+1). Longwood was one of only three teams to have three players shoot under 70 in round two, joining first-place Elon and second-place Appalachian State.

Now within striking distance of a top-three spot, the Lancers will play their final 18 holes at the three-round tournament Tuesday.
