WEST HARTFORD, Conn. — Sophomore setter Morgan Galligan tallied a team-high 25 assists and added 10 digs for a double-double to lead the Hartford volleyball team, but it wasn't enough as the Hawks fell against America East foe UMBC in straight sets inside of the Hartford Volleyball on Sunday afternoon. 

The Hawks fell to 2-13 (0-2 America East) on the season with the loss, while the Retrievers improved to 8-10 (3-0 America East) in the 2021 campaign. 
 
UMBC 3, HARTFORD 0 (25-16, 25-22, 25-17)

SET ONE: The two sides played to a 4-4 tie in the set before the Retrievers went on a 4-1 run to take an 8-5 lead to force a Hartford timeout. Out of the timeout, UMBC built its lead to 12-7 before the Hawks battled to cut the deficit to 17-14. However the Hawks used its second timeout of the set after falling behind 18-14. Out of the timeout, the Retrievers closed the set with a 7-2 run to take the set 25-16.

SET TWO: UMBC jumped out to a 6-2 lead to open the set, forcing Hartford to call a timeout. Out of the timeout the Hawks responded by rallying to tie the set at 11-11 before the Retrievers scored four straight points to take a 15-11 lead, forcing Hartford to use its final timeout of the set. Out of the timeout, Hartford clawed its way back to tie the set at 22-22 to force UMBC to use its first timeout of the set. Out of the timeout, UMBC rallied for three straight points to take the 25-22 set win.

SET THREE: After playing to a 3-3 tie in the set, Hartford rallied for three straight scores to take a 6-3 lead to force an UMBC timeout. Out of the timeout, the Retrievers went on a 4-0 run to take a 7-6 lead and force a Hartford timeout. Out of the timeout, UMBC built its lead to 12-8, forcing Hartford to burn its final timeout of the set. Out of the timeout, the Retrievers pushed their lead to 16-9, before holding on for the 25-17 set win and match victory.

HARTFORD NOTES & HIGHLIGHTS: Camryn Luginbuhl led the way with a team-high nine kills … senior Alex Lucero contributed a game-high 18 digs … sophomore Morgan Galligan compiled a team-high 25 assists and added 10 digs for a double-double … Mia Bilusic tallied a game-high 15 kills for the Retrievers. 
 
NEXT ON TAP
The Hawks will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 8, when they continue America East play against UAlbany on the road. First serve from the University Gym is set for 7 p.m.
