OXFORD, Ohio – Central Michigan overcame another slow start to seize the lead in the fourth quarter, but in the end, the Chippewas could not finish on Saturday in dropping their Mid-American Conference opener at Miami (Ohio), 28-17, at Yager Stadium.

"Obviously very disappointing when you lose," CMU coach Jim McElwain said. "There should be a lot of hurt in that locker room and yet, ultimately, we hurt ourselves. We've got to be the aggressors. We didn't do that today.

"You've got to come out and play with some energy and not wait. It seems like we keep waiting and we've got to get that remedied."

The Chippewas (2-3), who trailed 14-0 in the first quarter, go to Ohio (1-4) next weekend for a MAC game looking to avoid another slow start. A week ago, they were able to overcome it in posting a come-from-behind victory over FIU at home.

The Chippewas overcame Miami's early two-touchdown advantage and seized a 17-14 lead when Daniel Richardson found Dallas Dixon for an 11-yard touchdown less than two minutes into the fourth quarter.

But CMU simply couldn't stop Miami thereafter as the RedHawks got a 23-yard touchdown pass just over two minutes later to go back in front, 21-17, and then got another scoring pass with 7:44 left for the final margin.

The two scoring drives covered 78 and 50 yards, the latter of which began when Richardson was sacked on fourth-and-6 with CMU at the Miami 38-yard line.

"The start is really important – we can't just come out sluggish like we did today," said CMU tight end Joel Wilson, who had seven catches for 92 yards, both career highs. "(Trailing) 14-0 is never a good position to be in. You're already down two scores and you've got to build it back up and find a way to win the game.

"We had some momentum, we picked it back up, but it just wasn't enough for us."

Richardson completed 22 of his 41 pass attempts for a career-high 326 yards and two touchdowns. He left the game with an apparent shoulder injury that occurred on the fourth-quarter sack.

Richardson's other TD toss went for 41 yards to JaCorey Sullivan. Dixon finished with seven catches for 113 yards, and Sullivan had six receptions for 85.

The Chippewas were held to 52 rushing yards, an average of 1.9 per attempt.

"They really shut us down," McElwain said. "We really became one dimensional. My hat's off to them.

"I think when we step back and realize there's still a lot ahead. Our backs are against the wall because we've got to go on a run. We'll see what we're made of."
