BAILEY — One of the few annual festivals that didn’t succumb to COVID-19 cancellation turned out to be a huge success, according to organizers.
Raffles held at National Night Out, a community policing block party, raised $2,500 for Bailey Elementary School, said Bailey Police Chief Steve Boraski.
Principal Rhonda Lamm said she’s grateful for the money, but doesn’t know yet what the school will purchase with it.
Lamm, who is new this year, said she’s heard so many positive things about Bailey and now she’s seen the community’s generosity in action.
“They could have supported anyone with the money they raised,” Lamm said. “It’s heartwarming to know they chose the school.”
Featuring a line of food trucks and a nearly twice as many participants as the 2019 edition, National Night Out on Aug. 4 raised $800 more than last year.
“Thank you to all the vendors and everyone who participated in the raffle,” Boraski said.
Boraski thanked his officers and Tony and Jessica Harp for cooking hot dogs, which were free to attendees.
“Special thanks to my wife who really puts this all together and makes me look good,” Boraski said.
Mayor Thomas Richards echoed Boraski’s sentiment.
“Great job by everyone involved,” Richards said. “We can’t say thank you enough.”
Boraski and Richards met a few weeks ago to discuss National Night Out plans as the coronavirus pandemic postponed or canceled area festivals and community gatherings. They agreed Bailey should move forward with the block party.
Hurricane Isaias swept through eastern North Carolina the night before the event, leaving lower temperatures and a cool breeze in its wake.
Bailey’s National Night Out observance — held along Main Street in front of the police station — is in its second year.
Middlesex canceled its National Night Out event this year. Spring Hope hasn’t recently participated.
