Jason Gough's forecast: A break before the rain returns - Times Union

apenabe.blogspot.com

After an active day of weather for the southern half of our area, we'll have an opportunity to dry out today with some sunshine, mild-to-warm temperatures and a decent breeze. Rain returns tomorrow and it'll be bucket-like at times. From there, we dry out and cool off a bit to start the new week before another warm/cold front combo arrives to do its thing with higher temps and humidity, storms and cooler weather to follow.

Before we start with today, we have to visit yesterday: a high in Albany of 62 degrees! It was all that front's fault. It didn't quite make it through, so after rain in the morning for nearly everybody, the afternoon nastier storms were confined to the south of the Capital District. Like many episodes this year, we have not been able to line everything up to have a banner day of severe weather, and we're happy that has broken with the other many things 2020 has thrown our way.

That brings us to this morning, which is showing that the front stalled over our area. If you head north into the Adirondacks, temps are in the mid-50s with dewpoints about the same. Farther south, temps and dewpoints trend higher, getting into the low and middle 60s. With calm wind, those dewpoints and yesterday's rain, we have plenty of fog to kick the day off, too. It'll take some time, but the low clouds and fog will burn off with some sun breaking out into the middle and late morning.

That front will slowly sag to the south, leaving us on the dry side of it. For the afternoon, the driest air will remain north of the Twin Bridges but everyone will be pretty comfortable just the same. We'll have a mix of sun and clouds with a light west breeze and highs in the upper 60s to 80 degrees.

As we get into the night, the same front will be pressing its way back north. That'll bring more clouds and more humidity back into the picture, especially as we get deeper into the night. Temperatures will hold in the upper 50s to the middle 60s.

Tomorrow and Sunday

The day starts tomorrow with clouds before daybreak as the humidity continues to rise. This moisture, some courtesy of what was Hurricane Laura, will pool up ahead of a cold front and a chunk of energy overhead. That equates to a wet Saturday, end of story. Rain will commence around sunrise and will be more on than off through the day. Some of it will be heavy at times along with a few rumbles of thunder, but despite all that, we'll be in a tropical regime, temperature-wise. Highs will top out in the 70s for the most part all across the area.

A cold front will sweep through later in the evening, and it'll carry the rain with it. We'll be left damp and cooler, with lows back to the 50s to 60 degrees.

Sunday will be a day like Wednesday if you remember.

We'll have a mix of sun & clouds, a healthy west breeze and lowering humidity as dewpoints drop to the 40s to the middle 50s.

Next Week

Things look to trend to more active as it goes on, but there are still details to sort out as per usual with the amount of lead time.

First, though, Monday looks to be the pick of the week with sunshine and mild temperatures, in the upper 60s to the middle 70s.

Come Tuesday, we start to pick the humidity up a bit, which may lead to a few showers here and there. A frontal system looks to show up thereafter, with a warm front first into Wednesday bringing additional showers and perhaps a few storms. Then, we look at a cold front to swing through later in the week to bring showers and thunderstorms to close the week out. Temperatures will peak out mid-week, into the 80s in spots, before cooling off again in the wake of that front.

Many details and timing particulars to sort out, I'll have plenty of time to do so and will keep you posted.

Have a great day!
