MARTIN, Tenn. – An early goal in the game's 12th minute proved to be the difference as the defending Conference USA regular season champions Western Kentucky picked up a 1-0 exhibition victory over UT Martin on Saturday evening.
The Skyhawks challenged the Lady Toppers throughout the contest despite being outshot 15-5 in the match. UT Martin controlled possession for 56 percent of the match while WKU remained aggressive on its offensive half of the field. After an early goal, the home squad would hold their opponent out of the score column for the final 78 minutes of the night.
Playing in its second of three scheduled exhibitions during the preseason slate, UT Martin capitalized on the chance for fitness and experience with 18 players seeing action. The defensive pair of Maria Castaldo and Catey Hunt were the only Skyhawks to play the duration of the contest.
Senior Jill Hildreth led the team with two shot attempts while the trio of Izzy Patterson, Emma Elliott and Kiarnie Latham also tallied attempts of their own.
The team's three goalkeepers split the 90 minutes of action up with Erica Myers playing the first half where she tallied four saves. The second half saw freshman Annie McGraw and senior Courtney Turner record a clean sheet while combining for three saves in 45 minutes.
WKU came out of the exhibition victorious after scoring the contest's lone goal just under 12 minutes into the match. Brina Micheels used a perfect lead pass from near midfield to set up Lily Rummo along the right side who took the tough angle to beat the keeper and play the strike into the left corner of the net for the eventual game-winner.
UT Martin will play host to one final exhibition before the regular season official gets underway in just under two weeks. The Skyhawks welcome Arkansas State to campus on Friday, Aug. 13 with action scheduled for 5 p.m.
