The Chapel Hill Police Department, as well as the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, is searching for suspects following a recent string of break-ins reported in the area.

Chapel Hill Police shared a release on Tuesday detailing a break-in on Laurens Way in Chapel Hill. Authorities said the department was alerted to a breaking and entering case with four suspects around 12:30 p.m. at a residence on the road, which is near Weaver Dairy Road Extension and Homestead Road. The release did not specify whether items were taken from the Laurens Way residence, but said no injuries were reported in the incident.

Upon review, police said the case is similar to other break-ins being investigated by the Orange County Sheriff’s Office and the Durham Police Department. Tuesday’s release warned of suspects going door-to-door checking to see if residents are home, with one person approaching the door in a reflective, construction style vest. Photos and a video from the sheriff’s office depict one suspect knocking on the front door, being joined by a second suspect when no one answers, stealing items from the home and then driving away with another suspect in a waiting car.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post on July 28 that several of these break-in cases were reported during the period of July 8 through July 19. The suspects caught on video are described as “tall, slender black men wearing dark clothing,” by the sheriff’s office. The car seen in several security videos is described as a gray-blue Nissan Maxima, with a model likely between the years of 2008 and 2014.

Anyone who may have information about Tuesday’s break-in at Laurens Way, previous break-ins in the last month or the suspects in general is encouraged to call 911. The Orange County Sheriff’s Office says Investigator Nazworth and Investigator Stewart are assigned to these cases in its office and the men can be reached at 919-245- 2960 and 919-245-2925, respectively.

Both sheriff’s officials and Chapel Hill Police warned community members to not approach the suspects if you see them. Information that leads to an arrest could be eligible for a reward up to $2,000, according to the department.

Callers who wish to remain anonymous can call Chapel Hill-Carrboro-UNC Crimestoppers at 919- 942-7515.
