FRANKLIN SQUARE — Salem Township residents are being cautioned to watch for suspicious activity after Constable Dan Valentine reported some break-ins, some in daylight hours with residents home.

“I’m asking people to be a little vigilant when they see something suspicious,” he said Tuesday night during the trustees’ meeting.

If something doesn’t look right, either call Valentine at 330-427-0808 or call the Columbiana County Sheriff’s Office at 330-424-7255, or 911 in an emergency situation.

In one incident, Valentine said the residents were either mowing or working in their garden and the suspect or suspects snuck in through a back door.

In another incident off of Butcher Road, a resident was outside playing with their children and noticed someone standing in a nearby peach orchard. Apparently he had a bag and was stealing peaches and had some other vegetables in the bag, too. “I don’t know if the guy was stealing from people’s gardens or what,” Valentine said.

In other business, Valentine reported receiving several phone calls Tuesday from residents on Farrington after a contractor working on a home tracked mud all over the street with their vehicles. He called the contractor, who came back and cleaned it up. He also reported to Road Foreman Jason Entrikin that he received two calls about high weeds making it difficult to see for drivers at Crestview and Grafton roads, which Entrikin will address.

Trustee Chairman John Wilms thanked Entrikin and his crew for the great job done with this year’s chip and seal program, getting the roads ready for the Columbiana County chip and seal crews.

“This year everything did go great,” Entrikin said.

The township had a handful of roads done, including Lisbon-Canfield Road, Butcher Road and Jersey Ridge Road.

Trustee Bill Heston advised Wilms and fellow Trustee Ray Heddleson that he already talked to Entrikin about a culvert on Longs Crossing Road and one on Cherry Valley coming out of Leetonia. Apparently there was some flooding on the road on Cherry Valley and he’s thinking the culvert might be plugged up.

Trustees gave Entrikin the go-ahead for purchase orders for a new catch basin and pipe for Conkle Road estimated at $800 to $1,000 and for 10 buckets of hydraulic oil for an estimated $350. He also said he wants to get another barrel of motor oil. The first barrel cost $495.

The next trustee meeting will be held at an earlier time at 4:15 p.m. Aug. 31, with employee evaluations scheduled prior to the meeting.
