New covid-19 cases continued their rapid declines in Allegheny and Westmoreland counties.

Allegheny County recorded 183 cases in the past week — including just 15 on Wednesday — for a seven-day daily average of 26. It hasn’t been that low since hitting 24 on June 24, 2020. For perspective, the county was averaging 190 cases per day one month ago on May 9.

Westmoreland County added just three newly reported cases Wednesday — its third straight day of a single-digit total — with 89 cases total reported in the past week. Its seven-day average of new cases dropped to 13, a total not seen since reaching 12 on Sept. 19. At its peak on Dec. 16, the county averaged 469 cases per day.

The state also has seen a big drop in daily cases, according to Pennsylvania Department of Health. The state has been below 500 newly reported cases for the past five days. Pennsylvania’s daily average of 499 hasn’t been that low since reaching 482 on June 24. The state had hit its high mark on Dec. 16, when it averaged 10,579 new cases per day.

Since the pandemic began in March 2020, Allegheny County has seen 101,561 cases, Westmoreland 34,239 and Pennsylvania 1,206,935.

Elsewhere in the region, no county besides Allegheny had more than 100 cases in the past week: Fayette (66), Beaver (56), Butler (45), Washington (31), Indiana (24), Somerset (18) and Armstrong (12).

Only 10 counties in the state had at least 100 cases in the past seven days: Philadelphia (554), York (288), Allegheny (183), Berks (158), Delaware (144), Montgomery (138), Luzerne (119), Lancaster (115), Cumberland (105) and Bucks (100).

Deaths

Pennsylvania has seen 158 deaths reported in the past week to bring its total to 27,417. Of those deaths, 46 are from June, 106 from May and nine from April, with one removed from February and two from December.

The state’s seven-day average has actually climbed from 136 a week ago to 158 Wednesday; that is likely due to the state reporting only 11 deaths over the Memorial Day weekend when many government offices were closed.

The Allegheny County Health Department reported five deaths in the past week to hit 1,958 overall. State data shows seven deaths in Allegheny County in the last seven days with its total climbing to 1,991. The discrepancy between the two health departments has yet to be fully explained.

Westmoreland County hasn’t added a death in the past week, remaining at 769.

Elsewhere in the region, Armstrong added four deaths, Fayette three and Indiana, Somerset and Washington had one apiece over the past week. There were no new deaths reported this week in Beaver or Butler counties.

Hospitalizations

Allegheny County’s covid hospitalization number shrunk by almost 44% this week, going from 107 to 60, with 16 patients currently in an ICU and seven requiring a ventilator.

In Westmoreland County, hospitalizations crept up two, from 14 to 16. Westmoreland’s high mark was Dec. 28, when 183 patients were hospitalized.

Covid hospitalizations in the state declined by more than 30% in the last week, dropping from 929 to 650. The numbers have dropped almost 90% since the peak of the winter coronavirus surge, when there were 6,346 covid patients hospitalized on Dec. 16.

Vaccinations

Almost 60 percent of Pennsylvania’s population and 72.5% of the population 18 and older has received at least one covid vaccination dose, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC says 7,660,201 of the total population has one shot, with 7,372,678 of those 18 and older with one dose. The state is 45.5% fully vaccinated with the number at 56.3% for those 18 and older.

In Allegheny County, 47.4% of the population is fully vaccinated with 62.49% receiving at least one shot.

Westmoreland County is at 39.05% fully vaccinated and 47.83% receiving at least one dose.
