DeKALB, IL – The Northern Illinois University baseball team dropped the first game of its four-game series with the Central Michigan Chippewas Friday afternoon 11-0 at Ralph McKinzie Field.

"It was a good game really until the seventh when Central grinded that one run across," said head coach Mike Kunigonis. "They made a bit of an adjustment. It was a tough one. We left some runners on early, but that's baseball."

NIU (5-15, 4-5 MAC) starting pitcher Michael Lasiewicz (McHenry, Ill./McHenry) and Central Michigan's Jordan Patty kept the game scoreless for the first six innings. The Huskies had runners at first and second with one out in the second inning following a Morgan Holmes (Minneapolis, Minn./Des Moines Area CC) single and Jordan Larson (Dodgeville, Wis./College of DuPage) hit by pitch. Patty got out of the inning with a strikeout and flyout to end the threat.

Central Michigan (11-8, 3-2 MAC) got two runners on in the top of the third when Jakob Marsee was hit by a pitch, followed by a Zach Gilles walk. Lasiewicz got out of the jam by getting Chase Rollin to ground out to Dylan Lonteen (Peoria, Ill./Illinois Central College) at third base. The junior right-hander did not allow a hit until a two-out single from Garrett Navarra in the top of the sixth.

The Chippewas got on the board in the top of the seventh. With runners at the corners and one out, a Mario Camilletti safety squeeze bunt scored Colton Coca to give Central Michigan a 1-0 lead. Central Michigan added three runs in the top of the eighth to go ahead 4-0, then scored seven in the top of the ninth.

Lasiewicz threw seven innings, allowing four runs on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Two of his runs were earned. Centerfielder Matt Barnes (Bloomington, Ill./Heartland CC) had three of the Huskies' five hits in the game and also stole a base.

"This was another great start from Michael and again, unfortunately, we just couldn't get it done for him today," Kunigonis said. "He definitely deserves more than he got. He's been fantastic for us and he needs to keep doing what he's doing out on the mound."

NIU and Central Michigan will play a doubleheader of two seven-inning games on Saturday, with first pitch of game one at 12 p.m. Both games will be available via Huskie All-Access and live stats on NIUHuskies.com.
