No. 20 Wrestling Drops Home Duals with No. 15 Minnesota, No. 19 Purdue - Rutgers University Athletics - Rutgers Scarlet Knights

apenabe.blogspot.com
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Despite 5/5 match splits in both of its duals, No. 20 Rutgers (0-4) fell to No. 15 Minnesota (4-2), 21-18, and No. 19 Purdue (2-3), 18-15, on Sunday afternoon at the RAC. The Scarlet Knights picked up victories over five ranked individuals, as No. 1 Sebastian Rivera (141), No. 6 Sammy Alvarez (133) and Jackson Turley won both of their matchups during the Big Ten Conference tri-meet, which was presented by RWJBarnabas Health

RU's tri-meet against Minnesota and Purdue continues one of the toughest dual schedules in the program's recent memory. Rutgers has opened the dual season against four consecutive top-20 opponents and will face two more ranked teams – No. 7 Nebraska and No. 22 Michigan State – on Saturday in Bloomington.

"Today's format simulated Big Tens and the national tournament where you have to bounce back and wrestle right away," said head coach Scott Goodale. "We have to get used to two in a row and two really quality opponents back-to-back."

Rutgers vs. Purdue: How it Happened
• After Rutgers started in a 6-0 hole, the Scarlet Knights tied the dual with back-to-back decisions from Alvarez and Rivera. Alvarez earned a 6-0 decision over Jacob Rundell, while Rivera worked two takedowns in the first period and one in the third en route to a 7-6 decision over No. 19 Parker Filius, a 2020 NCAA qualifier.
• The Scarlet Knights then faced ranked individuals at 149 and 157 pounds, but put up good efforts in both bouts. Michael VanBrill dropped a tight 2-1 decision to No. 9 Griffin Parriott after he was called for locked hands in the third period. Robert Kanniard, fresh off his big win last weekend at No. 11 Ohio State, landed the first takedown of his match with No. 5 Kendall Coleman and added another in the second period before he lost, 13-8.
• Goodale went with true freshman Andrew Clark at 165 pounds, and the 2020 NJSIAA state champion wrestled hard in his 5-0 loss to Gerrit Nijenhuis. The loss put Rutgers behind, 15-9.
• Turley began his impressive afternoon with a 6-0 decision over Emil Soehnlen, while No. 12 John Poznanski (184) followed with what may have been the most impressive win of the day. The rookie scored in all three periods against No. 11 Max Lyon, which included a nice reversal in the second en route to a 7-4 decision over Lyon, a two-time NCAA qualifier. In just four matches, Poznanski has picked up wins over two top-12 opponents, as he also took down then-No. 8 Rocky Jordan last weekend in Columbus.
• Poznanski's decision gave RU an opportunity, as it trailed just 15-12 with two matches to go, but a loss from Billy Janzer (197) made it a six-point dual. Boone McDermott (HWT) earned his first dual victory of his Division I career with a 3-1 decision over Jamarcus Grant, but Purdue would walk away with a 18-15 dual win.

Rutgers vs. Purdue: How it Happened
• Once again facing a tough start down 6-0 in the team score, Alvarez scrambled his way to a 10-5 decision over No. 24 Boo Dryden for his first ranked victory of the 2021 season.
• Rivera followed and wasted no time against his opponent, Marcos Polanco. Up 7-1 after two periods, Rivera registered two takedowns and added near-fall points to lock up his third major decision of the season with a 14-3 win.
• VanBrill made it three consecutive wins for the Scarlet Knights, as earned swipes for a four-point first period and caught No. 19 Michael Blockhus on his back for a 10-5 decision. The win gave RU a 10-6 lead four matches into the dual.
• Kanniard once again scored first against No. 7 Brayton Lee, and held the 2020 NCAA qualifier to just a decision. A loss from Brett Donner (165) followed and Minnesota regained a 13-10 lead.
• With his team down and in need of a spark, Turley provided that and more. Turley controlled his entire match with No. 13 Jake Allar, as he opened with a six-point throw in the first period and caught Allar on his back multiple times in the second for his dominate 17-2 tech fall. His bonus points gave Rutgers a 15-13 advantage.
• Poznanski followed with his second ranked match of the day against No. 19 Owen Webster in a bout that came down to the final seconds. Tied 4-4, Webster scored a takedown with just under 10 seconds for the individual win. Janzer added a win at 197 pounds with his 6-4 decision over Garrett Joles, but reigning Big Ten champion and No. 1 heavyweight in the country Gable Steveson was able to score bonus against McDermott to secure the dual for the Golden Gophers.
