LYNCHBURG, Va. – North Carolina A&T suffered a midweek loss to Liberty, 16-2, Wednesday evening inside the Liberty Baseball Field in non-conference.
Peyton Winebarger got the start on the hill for A&T (1-3), and the Flames (2-2) quickly got to work, scoring five runs in the bottom of the second inning.
Two of those were credited to Winebarger, who got pulled after surrendering a two-run shot courtesy of Liberty's Logan Mathieu.
Flame infielder Josh Haney followed with an RBI single in a big day for the sophomore, going 3-for-5, including a home run, four RBI and three runs scored.
Junior third baseman Justin Williams led the way for the Aggies with his 2-for-4 performance. Sophomore second baseman Tony Mack notched the lone RBI for A&T with his fifth-inning double down the right-field line that scored senior Zach McLean.
Nine different pitchers made an appearance in the game for the Aggies, highlighted by D1Baseball's preseason Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) freshman of the year, Xavier Meachem. He went 1.0 innings allowing no runs and no hits with one strikeout.
It was 7-1 in the seventh inning before Liberty added six more runs and extended their lead.
The Aggies will welcome Appalachian State to War Memorial Stadium in their 2021 home opener on Friday, Feb. 26, at 4 p.m.
