A doubleheader sweep in Rocket City and a come from behind victory in the Inland Empire highlighted a successful Thursday night down in the Angels farm system.
Player of the Day
Much like the big league club did today, the 66ers completed a comeback victory in their game against the Lake Elsinore Storm, and it was largely powered by the bat of Bryce Teodosio. The Clemson product has been tearing it up since making his Low-A debut in late July, and he continued his hot stretch with three doubles on Thursday, which included one to tie the game in the bottom of the 8th and one to win it in the 10th.
Teodosio’s big day raised his average with Inland Empire up to .344, and his three two-baggers brought his extra-base hit total on the season up to eight in just 15 combined games between the 66ers and the ACL Angels. It’s been a very productive start for the undrafted free agent, and he could find himself on the rise once again if he keeps it going.
Triple-A Salt Lake
The Bees were scheduled to open a series against the Reno Aces on Thursday, but they were rained out before the game began. They’ll play a doubleheader tomorrow starting at 5:05 PM PST, with one of the games coming against the rehabbing Luke Weaver.
Double-A Rocket City
The Trash Pandas had a doubleheader of their own against the Chattanooga Lookouts, and they managed to pick up wins in both games, with both coming in very different fashions.
Game 1 was all about the bats, with Rocket City jumping out to an early 3-0 lead courtesy of home runs by both David MacKinnon and Izzy Wilson. Mitch Nay joined the home run parade as well, hitting his league-leading 21st dinger to put the team up 5-1 in the 4th.
Davis Daniel’s five strong innings continued his recent run of excellent starts and had the Trash Pandas looking good, but the wheels started to fall off once he came out of the game. A leadoff home run followed by three consecutive walks ended reliever Adrian Almeida’s day before he could record an out, and Nathan Bates was immediately welcomed out of the bullpen with a error from MacKinnon at first base that allowed two more runs to score. Bates and catcher Anthony Mulrine could not get on the same page after this, with a passed ball followed by a wild pitch allowing another two runs to come across and giving the Lookouts their first lead of the game.
The Trash Pandas didn’t quit despite this, though, as their bats came alive one last time when they needed them the most. A base hit by Nay and a walk by Michael Cruz put the tying and go-ahead runs on base in the final frame, and Ray-Patrick Didder played the hero by doubling them both in with two outs to walk it off in front of a raucous crowd in Rocket City
The second game of the doubleheader was a prototypical pitcher’s duel, with Trash Pandas starter Cristopher Molina and Lookouts righty Ricky Salinas trading scoreless frames for 5 straight innings. Molina put up another zero in the top of the 6th, and Didder rewarded his great efforts by coming through in the clutch again by launching a solo home run to left field to give Rocket City a 1-0 lead.
Connor Higgins came on in relief of Molina to close things out after this, and he got the job done with a clean inning to secure the sweep for the Trash Pandas in what was a very eventful day.
High-A Tri-City
The Dust Devils unfortunately could not match the excitement of their two minor-league counterparts, as they were dispatched by the Vancouver Canadians by a score of 9-4.
Tri-City fell into a huge hole right off the bat, as starter Jake Smith was tagged with three home runs in his one inning of work that put gave the Canadians an early 5-0 lead. The Dust Devils offense tried their best to fight back, with homers by Kenyon Yovan and Steven Rivas and an RBI base hit by Adrian Rondon bringing them within two runs. The Vancouver bats came alive once again after this, though, as they scored three more runs between the 5th and 6th innings to increase their lead back to five, where it would stay the rest of the game.
Low-A Inland Empire
Teodosio’s heroics may have been the big story in the 66ers win, but there were others that played big roles as well. Starter John Swanda kept the team in the game while the bats were struggling, tossing six innings of two-run ball in what was his second consecutive solid outing. Carson Matthews came through in the clutch as well, as his RBI base hit cut the Inland Empire deficit to one run and put the tying run on base for Teodosio.
Chase Chaney put in a solid effort out of the bullpen after the 66ers leveled things back up, pitching a scoreless ninth and giving up just one unearned run in the 10th to keep the team within striking distance. This allowed Kyren Paris to continue his excellent season in a big way, as he singled home Matthews from second to lead off the bottom half of the 10th and tie the game.
Paris was thrown out at second, but a single by Braxton Martinez and a walk by Miguel Rondon set the stage for Teodosio, who like Didder, came through with the game-wining hit for his team.
Transactions
Triple-A: Elvis Peguero, who was acquired in the trade that send Andrew Heaney to the Yankees, was assigned to the Bees from Rocket City. Scott Schebler was also activated off of the injured list.
Double-A: To replace Peguero, Zach Lingenfelter was assigned to the Trash Pandas from Tri-City.
Low-A: Pitcher Jhosua Alcantara was placed on the injured list.
