GREENFIELD — A water main break in the area of Arch Street resulted in low or no water pressure in parts of the city Thursday morning.
Department of Public Works Director Marlo Warner II said the main was originally built in 1973. He added the DPW stabilized the situation.
“We’re getting reports that in most places, folks’ water pressure is back,” Warner said Thursday at noon. “As soon as we were able to isolate the main — to turn it off in other words — the water system started replenishing.”
Warner said any parts of Greenfield south of where the water main broke were affected by the water pressure issues.
“You could draw a line east to west where the water line broke,” Warner said.
He said the next steps are to dig down to the pipe and see exactly where it broke before either repairing it or replacing it, but that process will be intensive.
“We lost a great amount of water, so the soils are really wet and unstable,” Warner explained. “It’s going to be a big excavation.”
Fire Chief Robert Strahan said the water main break stemmed from construction.
“It is a water main break in conjunction with construction,” Strahan said. “The situation is stabilizing and the DPW is working on it.”
Strahan noted that other area fire departments — Shelburne, Gill, Montague Center, Colrain and Erving — brought five water tankers to the city as a precaution, in case there should be a fire.
Warner said there should be no concerns about drinking the water.
“If there’s any questions on the water being safe to drink,” Warner said, “it’s absolutely safe to drink.”
