A severe thunderstorm dropped up to golf ball-sized hail on the Denver metro Sunday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service at Boulder.

The storm developed over southeast Denver and Aurora, said meteorologist Frank Cooper, and the weather service received reports of hail ranging in size from 1 inch to 1.5 inches, with golf-ball sized chunks failing about three miles north of Aurora.

A severe thunderstorm warning is in place until 6:30 p.m. for residents to the southeast of Denver, including in Centennial, Littleton and Englewood.

The storm was weakening as it went on, Cooper said. The Denver metro could see another storm or two until about 8 p.m., when the weather should clear, Cooper said.

“We had a slight chance of thunderstorms in the area and they finally popped,” Cooper said.

The storm hit as the Front Range starts what is expected to be at least a week-long heat wave, and temperatures this week are expected to reach into the 100s.
