What is the rule?

UEFA rules state that ‘cooling breaks’ are not permitted until the pitch-side temperature hits 32 degrees celsius.

If the temperature, taken during both side’s pre-match warm-ups, is above 32 degrees, a 90-second break is permitted 25 minutes into each half.

Why weren’t they used in England’s first Euro 2020 game?

When the temperature was taken at Wembley on June 13, ahead of England's match against Croatia, the recorded temperature was 28 degrees celsius.

Despite being one of the hottest June days on record, it was not hot enough to implement the ‘cooling breaks’.

When was the rule brought in?

‘Cooling breaks’ were first introduced by FIFA ahead of the 2014 Brazil World Cup which allowed for three minute long breaks for players to rehydrate.

The first game which used the rule was Netherlands vs Mexico which experienced highs of 39 degrees celsius at the Estadio Castelao in Fortaleza.
