When Davis “T-Bone” Codd signed to play in the Ontario Hockey League, there was the fear that he would never play high school golf again.
But the disappointment of a canceled hockey season was tempered a bit Saturday when T-Bone rallied to claim the Division 1 boys golf state title at Michigan State University’s Forest Akers West course.
The Brighton senior shot a 5-under 67 Saturday to finish with a two-day score of 140, three strokes ahead of Ieuan Jones of Ann Arbor Skyline, Murphy Kehoe of Traverse City West and Jack Zubkus of Grand Rapids Forest Hills Northern.
Skyline claimed the team state title with a team score of 594, finishing nine strokes ahead of Detroit Catholic Central. Traverse City West and Forest Hills Northern tied for third with 613s.
Codd, who played during the 2019-20 season with the Saginaw Spirit, saw his OHL season shorted in 2020 and canceled in 2021. But the silver lining in the dark cloud came after the 2020-21 OHL season was officially canceled.
The Michigan High School Athletic Association considers an agreement to play in the OHL a professional contract, rendering the athlete ineligible to play high school sports. For Codd, it was a difficult fact to face. As a sophomore, Codd finished sixth in the Division 1 boys golf state meet with a 3-over 147.
But when the OHL canceled its season, Codd appealed to the MHSAA to restore his eligibility. Since he hadn’t played “professional” hockey for more than a year, the MHSAA granted his request.
Codd shot a 1-over 73 in the first round, leaving him with plenty of ground to make up, which he did. He started Saturday on No. 14, birdying the first four holes. He finished with a birdie on 13. Brighton finished with 620, good for seventh.
“In the first round, I was looking at birdies on just about every hole, but I couldn’t convert them ... the putts weren’t falling,” Codd said. “I had a game plan going into the second day. Just go out and attack the hole. I started out with four birdies on the first four holes. When you get that to happen, it gets the wheels going to set the pace for the whole tournament.”
Making the championship even more challenging was the scheduling of the NHL Prospects Camp in Erie, Pennsylvania. The camp brings the top draft-eligible United States players together for three weeks of competition, similar to the NFL Combine. Codd was invited, but took a day off for the golf regional and two more days off for the state finals.
“I didn’t even get a practice round in, but I just wanted to soak up the last two rounds of high school golf I would ever play,” Codd said. “I came back and just wanted to enjoy the moment and the experience. I didn’t set any expectations. We’ve been going back and forth from Erie to Michigan for golf and hockey.”
The NHL Draft is July 23-24, with Codd hoping to hear his name called.
“Whatever happens happens,” Codd said. “I’ve been talking to a lot of NHL teams. I think this week helped my status. I hope it shows everyone I’m a competitor. The camp has been going well, considering I didn’t play a game in over a year. I was so amped up to show everybody the work I put in over the long break. I think I made the most of the opportunities.”
The final day of the prospect camp is Sunday.
The 5-foot-9, 165-pound Codd plays right wing for the Spirit. During the shortened 2019-20 season, Codd scored five goals with nine assists in 53 games.
Skyline led by five strokes after the first round and expanded its lead over Detroit Catholic Central to finish with a nine-stroke lead for its first golf state title.
Skyline was led by a pair of freshman, Jones and Vibhav Alokam.Jones led the Skyline team with a 71 in the first round before parring the second for a two-day total of 143. Alokam finished with a 149, following Friday’s 74 with a 75 Saturday.
Jack Guerrera led Catholic Central with a 147, finishing with a 75 Saturday after an even-par 72 Friday.
