ERICA MILLER/THE DAILY GAZETTE VP of Education at miSci Gaby Gastelum, of Delmar, demonstrates mixing sodium carbonate and acid at miSci in Schenectady on Friday, January 29, 2021. miSci launched new winter break program called “Full S.T.E.A.M. Ahead miSci,” with at home classes and experience for students.

The Museum of Innovation and Science is all about providing students with hands-on experience.

And even in a world that isn’t so hands-on right now, miSci is working to make that happen.

From Feb 15 to 19, miSci will be holding virtual classes featuring some in-person, at-home experiences, as the museum provides its students with material kits for pickup.

“MiSci vision is ‘…engaging visitors with interactive exhibitions and programs that encourage them to inquire about science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) subject areas,’” said Gabriela Gastelum, miSci’s vice president of education. “The best way to fulfill our vision is to provide students with hands-on experiences, which our audience enjoys very much.”

The mid-winter school break events will include courses to help students understand butterflies, constellations, nanoscale objects, the Perseverance Rover and its Mars landing and optical illusions. The experiments feature some marshmallows, telescope making and more, with the first four events best suited for kids from kindergarten to third grade, while the optical illusion demonstration is geared to third, fourth and fifth graders.

“During the past months, we have been offering to schools, libraries, and groups some of our most popular programs from a virtual platform,” Gastelum said. “An example of a virtual program for the general public was our recent second annual Noon Year’s Eve presented in partnership with the Children’s Museum at Saratoga (CMAS).”

Gastelum said she has high hopes for 2021.

“Families and parents are always looking for fun and engaging science activities for their children during school breaks and summer,” Gastelum said. “For the past five years, miSci has provided families and their children with more than twenty different programs. 2021 will be no exception.”

Families can sign up online through a form provided by miSci or by contacting Cindy DeMarco, miSci’s reservationist, at [email protected] or call 518-382-7890, Ext. 228.
