WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue became the first team to score in the second half vs. No. 23 Northwestern this season and forced a pair of late three and outs defensively to give itself an opportunity to tie the game, but the Wildcats hung on for a 27-20 victory Saturday at Ross-Ade Stadium.

Both teams struggled to run the ball and with third down conversions. But Northwestern (4-0 B1G) was able to maintain a better run-pass balance thanks in part to leading the entire second half. NU recorded 40 rushes vs. 36 pass attempts while converting 7 of 18 third-down chances. The Boilermakers (2-1 B1G) threw the ball 51 times vs. 17 rushes and were just 4 of 17 on third-down opportunities.

Zander Horvath's career-high nine receptions for 100 yards, almost all on screen passes, helped compensate some for a Purdue rushing attack that only generated 26 yards by running backs and wide receivers.

Ramaud Chiaokhiao-Bowman scored all three of Northwestern's touchdowns. He caught TD passes from quarterback Peyton Ramsey of eight, 18 and five yards. The senior scored in each of the first three quarters, with his third score extending the visitors' lead to 24-10.

David Bell turned 17 targets into nine catches for 78 yards. He also drew a pair of pass interference penalties, but the first one was offset by an illegal man down field flag on a flea flicker play. Quarterback Aidan O'Connell completed 28 of 51 passes for 263 yards and touchdowns to Garrett Miller and Milton Wright.

PURDUE'S BIG PLAYS
40-yard touchdown pass from Aidan O'Connell to Garrett Miller (7:27 in 2nd Quarter)
14-yard touchdown pass from O'Connell to Milton Wright (7:35 in 4th Quarter)
Cam Allen interception at 40-yard line (9:46 in 2nd Quarter)
Strip sack by Marvin Grant at 36-yard line; Northwestern recovers (0:50 in 2nd Quarter)
Zander Horvath gains of 18, 21 and 25 yards on screen passes in the first, third and fourth quarters
Deflected pass by Lorenzo Neal on third down to force a Northwestern punt (3:11 in 4th Quarter)
Two-yard tackle for loss by Derrick Barnes and Neal on third down to force a Northwestern punt (5:45 in 4th Quarter)
Six-yard tackle for loss by DaMarcus Mitchell to set up a third and 16 at the 24-yard line (12:55 in 4th Quarter)
Brooks Cormier's second punt of the game downed at one-yard line by Tyler Coyle (4:45 in 1st Quarter)

The Boilermakers were part of yet another one-score game, their sixth in the last seven games dating back to 2019, after Wright hauled in a 14-yard touchdown pass midway through the fourth quarter. That play capped a 14-play, 75-yard drive, during which Purdue overcame a second and 20 and also converted a fourth-and-four play. The Boilermakers then forced a pair of three and outs, with Lorenzo Neal contributing to a pair of key plays on third down – a tackle for loss to force the first punt and knocking down a pass at the line of scrimmage to force NU to kick it away again.

But the Boilermakers were only able to gain a combined eight yards over nine plays on their final two drives.

Purdue capitalized on Cam Allen's interception of a tipped pass, scoring on a 40-yard catch and run by Miller in the second quarter. On a well-designed crossing pattern, Miller rumbled untouched into the end zone for his first collegiate reception and touchdown after O'Connell hit the wide-open tight end in stride. The big play allowed the Boilermakers to pull even at 10-all with 7:27 remaining before halftime.

The Wildcats also took advantage of a turnover near midfield. O'Connell was scrambling up the middle of the field on a third-and-nine play when he was stripped by Conrad Rowley. Paddy Fisher recovered and returned the ball 24 yards to give NU a short field at the 10:08 mark of the third quarter.

The Boilermakers forced a pair of fumbles in the second quarter, but NU was able to recover both. Marvin Grant's strip sack of Ramsey with about one minute left before halftime helped provide Purdue with one more possession before the break, but a three and out followed.

Allen's interception was his second of the season and third career. DaMarcus Mitchell also forced a first-half fumble that NU was able to recover.

Purdue had to kick off into the wind after Miller's touchdown reception, with NU beginning its nine-play scoring drive with good field position after a 25-yard return by Kyric McGowan. Ramsey was 7 of 7 passing on the drive, connecting for an 18-yard touchdown pass to Chiaokhiao-Bowman for the go-ahead score.

Chiaokhiao-Bowman scored the game's first points on an eight-yard TD reception from Ramsey. One play earlier, Purdue was flagged for an offsides penalty on a fourth-and-one hard count at the 13-yard line. Northwestern also converted a third and 12 with a 16-yard pass play early on its 75-yard game-opening drive.

Miller's touchdown catch was also on a fourth-and-one play, with Purdue converting in a big way. One play earlier, sophomore King Doerue – Purdue's leading rusher in 2019 – had his first carry of the season. He became the first running back besides Horvath to carry the ball for the Boilermakers this year.

J.D. Dellinger connected on field goals of 30 and 23 yards. The fifth-year senior has now converted on 37 career field goals, moving into fourth place in program history. His 23-yard make accounted for the first points conceded by Northwestern in the second half this season. Saturday was the Wildcats' fourth game and they had only allowed 36 points total for the season entering the night.

Miller became the first Boilermaker since Bell in the 2019 season opener at Nevada to score on his first career catch.

The road team has won seven of the last nine meetings in the Purdue-Northwestern series dating back to 2009. The Wildcats improved to 4-0 for the first time since starting the 2015 season 5-0 and are 4-0 in Big Ten play for the first time since 1996.

Purdue returns to action Friday when it visits the Twin Cities for a 7:30 p.m. ET kickoff at Minnesota.
