DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) -The League of Women Voters of Southeast Alabama held a family fun day Saturday afternoon, all while helping residents get registered to vote.

The community block party and voter services event was at Gussie McMillan Park from 3 to 6 p.m. The event featured free hot dogs, guest speakers, and live music.

Attendees could check their registration status, register to vote, and find polling places. The League also helped with absentee applications and voter id’s, and voting rights restoration.

“That’s why it’s so important to vote, not only in the general elections, but in state and local elections," co-coordinator Brandesha Potter said. "Because this is what directly interferes with your life on a daily basis. You don’t like taxes? That comes from voting. You don’t like how public schools get less money? That comes from voting. If you wanna change your reality and community, you have to vote. You have to be involved in politics and involved in your community to get anything done. If you just want to sit down and complain about it, that’s fine. But if you actually want real change, you have to get out and become involved. And one step is voting.”

Potter says there are other groups in the Wiregrass who are planning similar events in the coming months.
