A water main break Saturday morning on Wolcott Street caused significant damage to the roadway and caused surrounding businesses to lose water.

Superintendent of Water Rob Langenauer said the water main first broke at 8:10 a.m. He said the water had caused a large sink hole in the travel lane of the westbound lane of Wolcott Street that effected traffic between Dallas Avenue and Pritchard Road.

“We are in the process of excavating it and locating the break,” said Langenuer. “All the businesses in the area have been notified and everyone has been very cooperative during a difficult situation.”

The 82-year-old eight-inch pipes are located about five-feet in the ground. Langenuer said he is unsure of what caused the leak, but it could be because of old age, poor quality of materials, or the manufacturer lacking good quality control.

At 12 p.m., Langenuer said four lanes were reopened on Wolcott Street, allowing for one travel lane in both directions. He said he expects repairs to be made and the water to be turned back on within the next two to four hours.
