Junior featherweight Shawn Simpson made quick work of Dakota Laster, dropping him twice en route to a first round knockout victory Saturday night at the Never Surrender MMA Gym in Abilene, Kansas.

With the victory, Simpson improves to 12-0, 4 knockouts.

Simpson, who resides in Chicago, Illinois, was fighting for first time since August 31, defeating veteran Samuel Gutierrez by unanimous decision.

From the opening bell, Laster was on the attack, throwing wide punches that left himself open to be countered. After Laster missed with a punch, Simpson counted with a left hook to the head, dropping Laster to the canvas.

Laster would beat the count, but was dropped by a vicious punch to the body by Simpson. Referee Nick Berens immediately stopped the bout at 1:18.

“It felt great to get back in the ring after not fighting for 10 months,” Simpson told BoxingScene.com after the fight. “(Laster) came out strong and wild, but I knew with my skills and timing that I would be able to get to him and slow him down.”

“Being in Nebraska working with Jamel and Desmond was great for me in getting in shape. I can’t wait to see what’s next for me and the team and we (are) ready to get back in the ring.”

The 21-year-old Laster, who resides in Hannibal, Missouri, drops to 3-10-1, 3 KOs.

Junior lightweight Desmond Jarmon dropped veteran Mike Fowler four times, earning a knockout victory in round four.

Jarmon dropped Fowler three times in round three, all from punches to the body. The Cincinnati, Ohio resident dropped Fowler again with a punch to the body, forcing referee Nick Berens to stop the bout at 46 seconds.

Fowler, who resides in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, drops to 7-28, 2 KOs.

Both Simpson and Jarmon now fight under the ‘First to Fight’ management company, which is run by WBO junior lightweight titleholder and Jerry Cazarez, who told BoxingScene he is hopeful both Simpson and Jarmon will return to action immediately.

“I’m proud of both Shawn and Desmond. Shawn showed poise by weathering his opponent starting off aggressively. (He) picked his shots and got the TKO (victory).”

“Desmond looked really good for not having fought in over a year. The work with his new trainer ‘Bomac’ (Brian McIntyre) is really starting to show. His future is big at (junior) featherweight.”

Featherweight Andre Marquez knocked out Chicago’s Antwan Robertson (10-20 1 NC, 6 KOs) at 1:19 of the opening round. Marquez (6-1, 4 KOs), who resides in the Los Angeles suburb of Glendale, has won his last six bouts after losing his pro debut by split-decision on May 10 of last year.

Super middleweight Chris Thompson defeated Brandon Wright (2-3, 2 KOs) of Chickasha, Oklahoma by unanimous decision. All three judges scored the bout 40-35 in favor of Thompson, (2-0, 1 KO), who resides in Kansas City, Missouri.

Super middleweight Jack Freriks (3-0, 2 KOs) defeated Richard Smith (0-2) by unanimous decision over four rounds.

The fights were part of a hybrid card promoted by Carden Combat Sports and were streamed live on Fite.tv.
