Jimmy Kimmel is taking an extended break from his late-night TV show.
The “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” host announced Thursday that he’ll be taking the summer off. He’s expected to return when he hosts the 72nd Emmy Awards on Sunday, Sept. 20.
“I’m taking the summer off to spend even more time with my family,” Kimmel said from his home, where he’s broadcasted since the coronavirus pandemic began. “There’s nothing wrong, I’m healthy, my family’s healthy, I just need a couple of months off.”
The New York Post reports Kimmel last took a brief break in 2017 when his son was born with congenital disease and required multiple open-heart surgeries. During that period, fill-in hosts included Chris Pratt, Jennifer Lawrence, Dave Grohl, Melissa McCarthy and Shaquille O’Neal.
Kimmel, who’s hosted the ABC comedy show for 3,130 episodes over nearly 18 years, will be similarly replaced during the summer sabbatical by a series of celebrity guest hosts. Thursday was Kimmel’s last new show; the guest hosts will begin July 6 after the staff takes a two-week break.
Celebrity guest hosts have not been announced, but one possible candidate is Matt Damon, whose “rivalry” with Kimmel has been a long running joke on the show. He appeared on Thursday night’s episode, emerging from a guest bedroom at Kimmel’s house while wearing a mask due to Covid-19.
Damon claimed he had been waiting for three months to appear as a guest on Kimmel’s show, and was furious that he’d have to wait longer if Kimmel’s taking a break.
“So stupid,” Damon said.
“You are so stupid,” Kimmel replied.
Then Kimmel’s wife appeared to slip out of the room in a bathrobe.
“Son of a bitch, you did it again,” Kimmel yelled, joking that he’ll be getting a divorce during his time off.
E! News reports Damon has actually spent much of the coronavirus pandemic in Dublin with his family, including private tutors for his kids. Damon was set to film a new movie, “The Last Duel,” in Ireland earlier this year.
