GREENVILLE, N.C. – No. 9 Texas Baseball dropped the first game of the NCAA Greenville Super Regional, 13-7, to East Carolina on Friday at Clark-LeClair Stadium.
The Longhorns (45-20) will look to even the series with the Pirates on Saturday at 11 a.m. CT.
Murphy Stehly went 2-for-4 with two homers, three RBI and two runs scored in the game. Austin Todd was 3-for-5, while Douglas Hodo III, Skyler Messinger and Austin Todd all had two hits apiece.
Pete Hansen started and was charged for five earned runs in four innings pitched. With the loss he dropped to 11-2 on the season.
Stehly launched a two-run homer in the top of the first to give Texas an early 2-0 lead.
The Pirates came right back in the bottom of the first to score three runs on three hits to take a 3-2 lead. Hansen was able to limit the damage by getting a strikeout and a fly out to end the inning.
East Carolina added to its lead in the fourth inning, scoring three more runs on four hits to take a 6-2 lead.
Texas turned to Zane Morehouse out of the bullpen to start the fifth inning and the Pirates greeted him with a solo homer to go up 7-2. Morehouse pitched two total innings of relief and allowed two runs while striking out three batters.
Texas cut into the lead in the top of the sixth with back-to-back solo homers from Ivan Melendez and Stehly. It marked the fifth time this season that the pair have it back-to-back homers.
Hodo trimmed the lead to 7-5 with a solo homer in the top of the seventh, his ninth homer of the season.
The Pirates got the run right back in the seventh on a solo homer to extend the lead to 8-5.
The Longhorns cut the lead to one run in the eighth, starting the inning with singles by Todd and Messinger before an RBI double by Ardoin. After a pitching change, Jack O'dowd followed with an RBI groundout to make it 8-7.
ECU had yet another answer in the bottom of the eighth though, scoring five runs to put the game out of reach.
