East Rutherford drops varsity football due to lack of participation - HighSchoolOT

— East Rutherford High School will not field a varsity football team this fall due to a lack of participation, the school announced on Friday.

Principal Tim Torvinen sent a letter to East Rutherford families announcing the news.

"This has not been an easy decision as input has been sought from our football coaching staff, parents, and players. Consideration was given to fielding only a varsity team like last year, however, with a limited number of experienced upperclassmen returning, the lack of high school experience among many of our current players, and with the goal to compete at the varsity level in 2022, we believe this is the right choice for our program for the 2021 season," Torvinen said in the letter.

East Rutherford posted a winless 0-7 record this spring and was 1-10 in the fall of 2019. However, the Cavaliers won 10 games as recently as 2018.

"This is not the news we wish to communicate at any time, however, we could not wait any longer to make our decision and share it with our students, parents, and school community," Torvinen said.

East Rutherford held two meet the coaches events in an effort to get students interested in playing football. Coaches have sent letters to students, made phone calls, and even made home visits.

"Our efforts will not stop until our once proud program is back playing on Friday nights," said Torvinen.

The school is working to increase the number of games on the junior varsity schedule.

"Our goal is to build our program back by working with the outstanding group of young men on our current roster, recruiting our student body for additional players, and working with our feeder programs," said Torvinen. "While this is certainly not the news we wanted to share, we look forward to working with our students and their parents in the future to move our varsity football program forward."

East Rutherford is a member of the Mountain Foothills 2A Conference this season, along with Brevard, Chase, Hendersonville, Patton, Polk, and R-S Central. The Cavaliers also had non-conference games scheduled against West Henderson in Week 1, Tuscola in Week 2, McDowell in Week 3, and Madison in Week 4.
