Anchorage high school runners get a break from the rain in season-opening cross country race - Anchorage Daily News

apenabe.blogspot.com

Nearly 200 runners from four Anchorage high schools opened the Cook Inlet Conference cross-country season Friday afternoon with a 3-kilometer race on somewhat muddy trails at Service High.

They got a break from the rain and enjoyed some sunshine, even though parts of the trail challenged them with mud and puddles.

Jared Gardiner of Dimond was the only runner to break 10 minutes. He finished in 9 minutes, 57 seconds to win the varsity/JV boys race.

Marley Ireland of East won the varsity/JV girls race in 12:10.

Nearly half of the runners have not yet met Anchorage School District eligibility requirements — which include participation in a minimum of 10 practices — so they competed in a division for ineligible runners. The two fastest girls time of the day came from that group — Robyn Miller of South (11:34) and Emily Erickson of Dimond (11:48).
