What's the major sticking point to NHL's participation in Beijing?
Eric Duhatschek, NHL senior writer: Primarily, it’s insurance-related. Media rights remain an issue. Who pays the NHL’s costs to participate in an Olympics halfway around the world is an issue. Plus, all new for 2022: Finding an insurance carrier willing to underwrite a complex policy that needs to cover both injuries and any COVID-19 related illnesses that may arise.
According to the league, even if the NHL were to give Olympic participation the green light, both the league and the players association will retain the option to shift course and not participate should COVID-19 conditions worsen or pose a threat to the health and safety of the players.
Ultimately, if the decision is made not to go, the league will release a revised second schedule that will try to stick to the original as close as possible.
Can ESPN, Turner get off to a strong start with the schedule?
Richard Deitsch, senior media writer: I think both networks got what they desired.
ESPN leads off on Opening Night with the two-time defending champions (and a banner raising) against a team with known stars in Pittsburgh. The second game is likely to draw even better — the first-ever regular-season game for the Seattle Kraken against the Golden Knights. Both games will also be simulcast on ESPN+. If I'm ESPN, I wanted Seattle very early.
The first-ever live NHL regular-season action on Turner Sports will feature three teams that rate very well nationally with the TNT primetime doubleheader of Rangers-Capitals, followed by Avalanche-Blackhawks. (Colorado, as great as it is, would be the one team here that is not a historic national draw.) It's a good opening night for Turner.
