Hyland Mexico ProfileTOKYO – One day after making her Olympics debut, former Cal Poly softball righthander Sierra Hyland did not feature for the Mexico Women's National Team as her side was edged in eight innings by hosts Japan at Yokohama Stadium, 3-2.

During a matchup that began at 12 noon on Thursday in Japan, Mexico fell behind 1-0 in the second inning before equalizing during the top half of the fifth with shortstop Anissa Urtez homering to center field. Japan, however, regained a 2-1 lead with a run in the bottom of the fifth.

Mexico forced extra innings in the top of the seventh, placing its first two batters on the corner bases before Urtez delivered a single to score Long Beach State's Suzy Brookshire.

With the international tiebreaker rule in effect to start the eighth inning, Mexico stranded the bases loaded before Japan shortstop Mana Atsumi bunted home center fielder Eri Yamada during the bottom half for the decisive run.

Mexico, which outhit Japan, 6-5, stranded eight runners.

Hyland, the Big West Conference's all-time strikeout leader and a two-time NFCA All-America selection at Cal Poly (2014-17), made her Olympics debut on Wednesday during Mexico's 4-0, tournament-opening loss to Canada.

With Thursday's loss, Mexico now shares the bottom third of the sixth-team bracket with Italy (edged by Australia, 1-0). Both countries, however, trail Australia and Canada by just one game. Japan and the United States lead the group with 2-0 marks.

The top two countries in the standings will meet in the Tuesday, July 27 gold medal game. Countries finishing third and fourth will play for the bronze medal.

Mexico next faces the United States on Friday, July 23 at 10:30 p.m. PT (Saturday, July 24; 2:30 p.m. local).
