SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) - A water main break slowed traffic Friday at a busy south Springfield intersection.

Water main breaks are not uncommon during extreme weather conditions, whether it be heat, cold air or other conditions. A water main break this morning at the busy intersection of Glenstone an Seminole slowed down traffic and impacted local businesses.

The Sub Shop down the street was one of the businesses impacted by the burst.

Ethan Seehusen, the owner of the Sub Shop said, “Sometime’s life’s an adventure, you just got to roll with it.”

Life has served Ethan Seehusen some tough dishes this week. Monday he closed the shop because of the snow. Then he lost power for an hour during the rolling blackouts earlier this week.

“And then I show up this morning and we have a busted water main,” Seehusen said.

The burst water main impacted 21 City Utilities customers Friday. Traffic delays and detours led to a more widespread problem.

Seehusen said the traffic delays did not bother him.

“If people want the sub shop, they’re going to get here, even if they parachute from the sky,” Seehusen said.

Because the Sub Shop lost water, Seehusen bought seven gallons of water from a local store so his customers would have drinks.

“Made a spur of the moment trip to the store, and got gallons of water and lots of cans of soda,” Seehusen said, “You can choose to be mad about it, or feel like you’ve been wronged or whatever but you have to roll with these things. Life happens.”

This was the second water main break Friday, according to Joel Alexander, the Manager of Media and Energy Services with City Utilities.

“That’s just not uncommon this time of year,” Alexander said.

Water mains can burst any time of the year if the conditions are right. As the ground expands and contracts in response to the temperatures, it adds stress to the pips.

This water main added a challenge of being eight feet deep in the ground.

“The crews had to excavate and open up the pavement there,” Alexander said.

And use extra safety precautions which added onto the delays. Repairs this afternoon wrapped up, but expect more delays in the future.

“We’ll make a notification to the city, and they’ll make a repair at some point and put new pavement on that,” Alexander said.

The past two years, City Utilities has seen the number of main breaks drop from a yearly average of 178 to 124.

City Utilities says with warmer weather it’s a great opportunity to look at weatherizing homes, if needed, to save money and perhaps prevent a weather-related failure of their home’s utilities in the future. City Utilities has an insulation rebate that can help with that.
