PITTSBURGH – The Pitt women's basketball team (4-7, 2-6 ACC) wasn't able to hold onto a 15-point first half lead on Sunday afternoon at the Petersen Events Center as they fell 71-67 to the Syracuse Orange. The Panthers had a chance to tie the game late but the three-point attempt by Destiny Strother fell just short.

"Obviously, this one really hurts just because I thought this was a game that our kids responded," said head coach Lance White. "The players prepared extremely well, and we just couldn't finish it and that for me, is really disappointing. But again, we got the looks we needed to and the problem of turnovers, we just turn it over too many times to give ourselves a chance against great teams."

The Panthers gave themselves a chance to tie the game in the final minute as Dayshanette Harris connected on a pair of free throws to cut the Syracuse lead to 68-64 with 1:13 remaining in the game. On the ensuing Orange possession Amber Brown earned a steal and Jayla Everett connected on a triple to bring Pitt within one, 68-67, with 53 seconds to play. After Syracuse made a pair of free throws to push the score to 70-67 with 29 seconds remaining, the Panthers had a three-pointer for the tie from Strother that came up just short and the Orange grabbed the rebound and sealed the game with a free throw.

After the Orange opened the game with five straight points, the Panthers defense locked down and didn't allow another field goal the rest of the quarter. Liatu King netted back-to-back buckets and Everett and Gabbie Green connected on triples to push the Pitt lead to 10-5 at the media timeout. After a Syracuse free throw, Pitt closed out the quarter with a layup from Amber Brown and a layup from Green to give Pitt the 14-6 lead through 10 minutes.

The Panthers were able to extend their lead out to 21-6 early in the second quarter as they scored the first seven points of the quarter. Brown made a free throw to get the game to the media timeout with Pitt holding the 22-10 edge while holding the Orange to just 14% shooting from the floor. The Orange cut the deficit to eight, 25-17, but Everett responded with a block and layup and Strother drilled a triple to send the game to half with Pitt leading 30-22.

The Orange opened the third quarter 3-for-3 from the field as they scored the first seven points to force Pitt to take a timeout, clinging to the 30-29 lead with eight minutes left in the quarter. After the timeout, Everett made a pretty driving layup and King finished off a layup to push the Pitt lead back to four, 35-31. Syracuse responded with a layup but Cynthia Ezeja had back-to-back buckets to send the game to the media timeout with Pitt leading 39-34. The Orange were able to outscore Pitt 15-8 in the final four minutes of the quarter to take the 49-47 lead into the final quarter.

Syracuse again started the fourth quarter quick as they pushed their lead out to 55-47 after scoring the first six point of the final quarter. Pitt responded as Everett made a jumper and Rita Igbokwe finished off a layup to make it 55-51 in favor of the Orange. The Orange pushed their lead back to seven, 66-59, with just over two minutes to play but Everett drained a triple to keep the Panthers in it. The Orange battled down the stretch and made their free throws to secure the 71-67 road victory.

The Panthers were led offensively by Everett who finished her afternoon with 16 points, four assists, two steals and two rebounds while going 3-for-6 from behind the arc. Green finished off her senior day with 13 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals across 31 minutes of work while Brown netted 10 points and six boards in the loss. King came off the bench and provided Pitt with seven points, six rebounds and three assists in 16 minutes of work.

Syracuse was led by Kamilla Cardoso who netted 22 points and eight rebounds while Kiara Lewis netted 22 points and four assists. Tiana Mangakahia continued to dish the rock at a high clip as she netted 11 assists in the win.

As a team, Pitt shot 33.9% from the floor while the Orange shot 38.9%. The Panthers held the edge in rebounding, 42-34, and second chance points, 23-13, in the loss. The Orange connected on 23-for-33 from the charity stripe while Pitt went 18-for-26 in the loss.
