FLINT, MI — The power of coffee connected a small group of coffee enthusiasts to embark on a new journey during the COVID-19 pandemic and help others “break free from boring.”

Sean Murray, Jono Diener and Dom Kohn have all worked in the coffee realm in some capacity for some time. In June, something clicked for all three of them. Murray and Diener were in transformational phases of their careers but had always longed to start a coffee company.

“The initial talk was: 'What is everyone else doing? There are a lot of cool places and what can we do differently?” asked Diener, chief creative officer for the company.

After a few months of planning and meeting, Rootless Coffee Co. was created and launched in late September.

The company focuses on e-commerce and wholesale to sell its product because of the potential challenges with coronavirus.

“Especially during COVID and all that, right now, e-commerce is king,” Diener explained.

Another focus of the company is to make sure coffee is accessible and affordable to everyone, including novice coffee drinkers, coffee fanatics and everyone in between.

“We also noticed that this industry can be almost exclusive, so that people who are not super passionate about coffee but they like a good cup of coffee, they feel like they don’t know what’s going on,” said Murray, the company’s founder and CEO.

Packaging for Rootless coffee features fun comic-like graphics from local artists. Kohn’s background in music and comic writing allows him to connect with artists and creatives that are commissioned to do graphic designs, video or photos for the company.

“We want to make sure that we’re an art-forward coffee company, but we still focus just as much on the quality of the coffee,” said Kohn, who focuses on the wholesale side of the business.

The trio describes the coffee as unique, awesome and delicious.

Customers can purchase the coffee at several locations around Flint including Penny’s Cafe, located in the Flint Farmers' Market, Soggy Bottom Coffee, Comma Bookstore and Social Hub and Flint Trading Co.

Customers can purchase the following bags of coffee on the company’s website or at the aforementioned locations:

  • “A Damn Fine Cup of Coffee” - the company’s staple roast is a blend of Nicaraguan and Brazilian coffee beans.
  • “Berry Kiss” - the company’s best single-origin Ethiopian coffee.
  • “Dark” - the darker take on the company’s staple roast.
  • “Out There” - Colombian roast with hints of citrus.

“We get coffee from all over the world. We used different importers based in the states and they bring in the coffee,” Murray said. " One of the things for us is that all the coffee we get is ethically sourced. The companies we work with don’t buy coffee that is not ethically grown."

On Devil’s Night, Friday, Oct. 30, the company is partnering with Flint City Hard Cider, 610 Martin Luther King Ave. The cider company will use the Rootless coffee to launch an exclusive drink. The coffee company will also release new merchandise including shirts, hoodies and beanies. Proceeds from the sale will be used to help the coffee company move into a space to continue to operate the business.

Murray, Diener and Kohn actively try to keep the company fun and not work within parameters that other companies might. “Break free from boring” is a tagline they’ve adopted for the company to enforce the ideas of fun and collaboration.

“What was really solidifying to me was when I found two other dudes that were on the same path and had the same vision and had same goals," Murray said. “It was just super awesome to come into this thing and not be alone.”
