Snow, freezing temperatures to break 90-degree streak in Loveland on Monday night - Loveland Reporter-Herald

This weekend’s 90-degree temperatures will be cut short when a Monday night storm ushers in snow and freezing weather.

The National Weather Service is predicting a high of 90 on Monday with the overnight temperature dipping to 31 degrees, followed by a 100% chance of snow on Tuesday with a high of 37 and a low of 29.

“Winter will make an early arrival as a strong system from the north will bring much colder temperatures as well as accumulating snow to the region,” according to an advisory on the National Weather Service website. “Temperatures will drop quickly behind a cold front Monday night with snow starting shortly after midnight over the higher terrain and foothills.”

The National Weather Service is calling for 3 inches to 6 inches along the Interstate 25 corridor, including in Loveland and Fort Collins. More snow is expected at higher elevations, including up to 12 inches over the site of the Cameron Peak Fire, according to fire management officers.

The change in temperature to freezing will be a vast dip from temperatures in the 90s over the weekend that led to red flag warnings and extreme fire behavior on the Cameron Peak Fire burning west of Fort Collins. The snow and cooler temperatures are expected to help with the fire and improve the air quality along the Front Range, which has been blanketed by smoke and ash Saturday and Sunday.

The storm will start with some rain on Monday night, turning to snow.

The snow falling on trees, which have their full leaves, could cause branches to break, and the storm also could result in slippery, slushy roads and harm to gardens and crops due to the temperature drop, according to the weather advisory from the National Weather Service.

Officials advise residents to cover plants and gardens and to drive carefully on the slushy roads.

The forecast calls for a chance of snow through 7 a.m. Wednesday before the sunshine returns. Temperatures are expected to gradually warm throughout the week before reaching 78 on Saturday.
