Sergey Kovalev appears to have one less legal wrangle to worry about.
The former light heavyweight titleholder is no longer the subject of a breach-of-contract lawsuit filed in January by Jamie Frontz, the woman who accused him of beating her in June 2018 after rebuffing his “romantic advances,” after she dropped the suit on her own accord. Frontz had sued Kovalev in January for allegedly failing to honor the terms of their settlement, which called for the Russian to pay Frontz $650,000, over a period of time, in three installments.
Frontz sent a voluntary dismissal notice to the district court of California on Aug. 24.
“Plaintiff Jamie Frontz…hereby dismisses all causes of action in the Complaint against Defendant Sergey Kovalev…without prejudice,” Frontz’s lawyer wrote.

The Kovalev-Frontz fiasco dates back to 2018, when the two reportedly met for the first time at a grand opening of a boxing gym in Big Bear, Calif. Frontz claimed Kovalev followed her to her home afterward and then became violent after she repeatedly refused to have sex with him.
Kovalev, 37, was arrested around June 9 in San Bernardino, California and charged with assault and battery. Frontz filed her initial civil lawsuit the following January, claiming that as a result of their altercation, she had suffered a concussion and lasting physical damage, including a broken nose and displaced disc.
Frontz decided to drop that suit after she came to a settlement agreement with Kovalev in October 2019. As part of the arrangement, Frontz refrained from mentioning Kovalev on social media and waived her right to criminal restitution from Kovalev in the ongoing criminal case, which is being prosecuted by the Sheriff’s Department of San Bernardino County. A jury trial for the criminal case is scheduled to commence on Oct. 5.
Frontz’s decision to sue Kovalev (34-4-1, 29 KOs) this past January over their settlement had to do with the fighter allegedly reneging on paying the second installment, in the amount of $200,000, which was due on or before Dec. 2, 2019, or after Kovalev’s fight against Canelo Alvarez on Nov 2, in which he earned a reported career-high eight-figure purse. Kovalev was knocked out in the 11th round and lost his WBO light heavyweight title.
According to Frontz’s complaint, Kovalev’s wanted to resolve the settlement in three installments because, at the time, he “lacked” the necessary funds to pay it in its entirety.
The first installment, in the amount of $250,000, was purportedly paid by Kovalev’s promoter, Main Event’s Kathy Duva.
Kovalev has not fought since his bout against Alvarez last November. He was reportedly arrested on a DUI charge in Los Angeles in February.
