Too big, too strong, too skilled.
In Los Angeles, Canadian welterweight boxer Cody Crowley, in control throughout, defeated Albuquerque’s Josh Torres by unanimous decision Sunday in a bout televised nationally on Fox Sports 1.
Crowley, a classic boxer-puncher, showed why he’s undefeated in improving his record to 19-0 with nine knockouts.
Torres fell to 22-7-2 with 13 KOs.
All three judges scored the 10-round bout a shutout — 100-90 — for Crowley. The Journal scored it 99-91, giving the fifth round to Torres.
Nicknamed “Pit Bull,” Torres lived up to his nickname with a courageous performance. But he simply lacked the firepower to match Crowley’s arsenal.
Torres had prepared thoroughly for Crowley’s southpaw stance in training, but it didn’t appear to matter which side the Peterborough, Ontario fighter’s punches were coming from. Too many of them landed, and too few of Torres’ found the range. Torres threw far fewer punches as well, often finding himself on the defensive.
Crowley, taller by at least 3 inches, began the fight using his long right jab to keep Torres at bay. As the bout progressed, Crowley — seemingly convinced that Torres couldn’t hurt him — closed the distance and began landing hard punches with either hand.
Torres responded with a occasional solid shots to the head and the body, but landed nothing that fazed Crowley.
After the seventh round, Al Torres, his son’s head trainer, said he would stop the fight if the younger Torres continued to take punishment.
Josh Torres, who has never been stopped, told his father in no uncertain terms he wanted to continue. He finished on his feet and fought to the final bell, as he had in his previous 30 pro fights.
