Arenado heads to IL before important Giants-Rockies series originally appeared on NBC Sports Bayarea
With a banged-up rotation, lack of depth in the outfield and their best player sidelined, the Giants can use any break they can get this week. They got a huge one Monday before the start of their series with the Colorado Rockies.
Third baseman Nolan Arenado, perhaps the greatest Giant-killer in MLB history, was put on the Injured List on Monday because of AC joint inflammation and a left shoulder bruise. Arenado's season is over, and the Giants won't have to find a way to get him out or hit a ball past him the next four games.
Arenado has a .910 OPS in 132 career games against the Giants, with 31 homers and 104 RBI. This is just the second IL stint of his career and first in six seasons.

The Giants host the Rockies the next four days at Oracle Park in games that are crucial to their chase for a postseason spot. They have a tough weekend task, with the San Diego Padres then coming in for four games in three days.
The Rockies recalled outfielder Sam Hilliard to take Arenado's roster spot. In addition, they released right-hander Wade Davis, the former All-Star who had a 6.49 ERA in three seasons with the Rockies.
