Anna Kramer of Spring Lake shot 2-under-par 70 Saturday in the opening round of the Michigan Women’s Amateur Golf Championship to take a one-shot lead over Anika Dy of Traverse City at Forest Akers West in East Lansing.

Kerrigan Parks of Flushing, the 2018 champion who won the West Virginia women’s state am last week, was two shots off the lead after matching par with 72 while four players that included 19-time GAM champion Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll – the women’s golf coach at Michigan State – were tied for fourth at 73.

Kramer, who plays at the University of Indianapolis, made three birdies against one bogey.

“I just had one bad hole and that was because of just one bad shot on a bunker shot that was hard anyways with the type of lie I had,” Kramer said. “I hit my irons and wedges fairly well. I could have made a couple more putts, but I was a little lucky in spots with my driver on the front, too.

“It was a solid start overall.”

Dy, who plays for the University of Michigan, is the reigning Michigan PGA Women’s Open champion. She made three birdies and two bogeys.

“I drop-kicked my tee shot on my first hole (par 3 No. 10) into the bunker, and then I hit it in the bunker again on 11,” she said. “I saved par on both of them, but it seemed like the rest of the day I was playing safe, not going for pins at all, just hitting to the middle of the greens and being careful.”

Parks, the 2018 GAM Women’s Player of the Year, plays at Marshall University.

She won the West Virginia state by 15 shots last week and wasn’t planning to play in Michigan until driving home to Flushing Friday night and getting into the field when Katie Chipman of Canton withdrew because of an illness.

Parks made three birdies and three bogeys.

After Sunday’s second round of stroke play, the field will be cut to the low 64 players who will enter match play beginning Monday. There will be two rounds of matches Monday and Tuesday before the semifinals and championship match are contested Wednesday.

Tee times and scores can be found on the Golf Association of Michigan website.
