The city of Hillsboro lost significant water pressure after a 12-inch main line was breached Monday afternoon, July 6, near the intersection of South Welch Street and Ice Plant Road.
“When that one goes, everyone’s out,” Hillsboro City Clerk Cory Davidson said of the water line. He estimated that the city lost about 250,000 gallons of water during the break; that’s about one-fourth the water tower capacity.
The line break occurred during an Ameren gas bore, Davidson said, and was repaired by city employees who finished the job at about 11 p.m. Monday night.
A city-wide boil order–required after water line breaks until the state EPA determines no contaminants entered the system during the break–was lifted Wednesday afternoon, July 8. The communities of Coffeen, Schram City and Taylor Springs–who all purchase water from Hillsboro–remain under boil order until they clear their own samples on Thursday or Friday.
