The Washoe County School District’s Board of Trustees yesterday voted to drop any changes to school start times proposed for next school year.
School staff gave a presentation on the options to change start times only to have Superintendent Kristen McNeill end the presentation by saying she did not recommend any of the options.
“Due to the potential scheduling impacts to students and families…it is recommended the [board] delay its decision to move forward with any changes to the bell schedule in order to provide time for additional analysis,” she said.
McNeill, after WCSD received thousands of survey responses and emails to trustees, said more feedback was needed.
“I do believe that we should not move forward with these particular options for bells and change the bells schedule at this time,” she added. “This is a great impact on the district [and] on families and staff.”
The trustees agreed.
“This shows the process works,” Trustee Beth Smith said. Smith has children in schools and said she supports a reconsideration of the bell schedule.
Trustee Jeff Church agreed.
“What’s driving the bus is the lack of bus drivers,” he said, referring to the labor shortage.
Bob Conrad is publisher, editor, and co-founder of This Is Reno. He has served in communications positions for various state agencies and earned a doctorate from the University of Nevada, Reno in 2011, where he completed a dissertation on social media, journalism and crisis communications. In addition to managing This Is Reno, he holds a part-time appointment for the Mineral County University of Nevada Extension office.
