Tigers pick up conference win on Senior Day - Memphis Official Athletic Site

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Tigers split series and doubleheader with the Houston Cougars on Senior Day 7-2 and 3-0.
 
Today was senior day for the Tigers. Coach Poole and her staff honored seniors Sara Ann Davidson, Mariah Nichols, Baylee Smith and Delaney Smith. Coach Poole also honored Kali Perque, a senior from the 2020 season, today. Perque was unable to have a senior day last year due to COVID-19.
 
GAME 1
Sophomore Chyanne Ellett started game one in the circle for the Tigers. This was Ellett's ninth start of the season. Ellett went three innings, giving up four runs on two hits. Hallie Siems made her second appearance in the circle for the Tigers. Siems threw three innings, giving up three runs on four hits. Mariah Nichols entered the circle for the Tigers in the seventh inning only giving up one hit. Siems led the team with four strikeouts.
 
Logan Hulon started her second game of the series in the Cougars. She threw a complete game for Houston, her second of the season. Hulon gave up two runs on seven hits. She also had five strikeouts.
 
After two scoreless innings, Houston scored first. After Rock Benavides hit a double to left center and Sarah Queen walked, Britaney Shaw hit a home run giving the Cougars a 3-0 lead.
 
The Tigers got a run back in the bottom of the inning. With one out, senior Sara Ann Davidson hit a double to left center. Then Mia Greenzweig got her first hit of the year with a single up the middle. Gracie Morton then hit a sac fly to left, cutting Houston's lead to 3-1.
 
In the fourth inning Houston got a run in the top half but the Tigers got it right back. With one out, LaNya Bates hit a single through the left side, scoring Kendall Lee from third and making it a 4-2 ball game.
 
Houston added another run in the top of the sixth on a Charese Wyatt pinch hit single, to extend their lead to 5-2. The Cougars would add two more runs in the seventh, on back to back RBIs by Bethany Busch and Aspen Howie.
 
GAME 2
Mariah Nichols got the start for the last home game of the season for the Tigers. Nichols threw her third complete game of the season for the Tigers. Nichols picked up her second win of the second on a seven hit, zero run performance. She finished the game with three strikeouts and only two walks.
 
Megan Lee got her first start of the series for the Cougars. Lee went four and two thirds innings for Houston. She gave up two runs on five hits. Rachel Hertenberger came in relief for the Cougars with two outs in the bottom of the fifth. Hertenberger finished out the game for the Cougars, giving up one run on one hit
 
The Tigers and Cougars were scoreless through two and a half innings. In the bottom of the third inning, the Tigers got on the board. Delaney Smith reached on an infield single then stole second, her 80th of her career. Smith scored on an RBI single by Dean. After Dean stole third, she scored on a sac fly to right by Kendall Lee giving the Tigers the 2-0 lead.
 
The Tigers would add one more run in the bottom of the sixth, off of a leadoff home run to center by Lee.
 
The Tigers made some great defensive plays in the game, finishing both the fourth and fifth inning with double plays. Senior Baylee Smith also made an impressive play in left field to close out the game.
 
 
The Tigers improve to 9-36(2-18) and the Cougars improve to 15-30(6-14).
 
Up Next
The Tigers will finish up the regular season next weekend, with a four game series at East Carolina. The Tigers will play a doubleheader on Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00p.m.
