POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - The Union College baseball team faced off against Vassar College on Sunday, dropping both ends of a Liberty League doubleheader at Prentiss Field.  Union dropped the first game by a score of 16-8.  The second game of the day was a much lower scoring affair, with Vassar coming out on top, 3-2.  The Dutchmen fall to 7-7 (5-5 Liberty League) and look towards next week's series against Bard College.

Game 1: Vassar 16, Union 8

Game one of the day was a wild contest that saw 19 runs scored in the first three innings, but Vassar scored 14 straight runs after spotting Union an early 5-0 lead on the way to a 16-8 victory.

Senior Matt Toy had a big day for the Dutchmen, leading the team with 4 runs batted in and a home run in the first game, while classmate Jack Koch led the team with two runs scored.

Senior Kevin Chaimowitz got things going early for the Dutchmen with an RBI double in the first inning, and Toy hit a three-run home run immediately after, putting Union up 4-0 in the first.  A double-steal by seniors William Bellamy and Elias Kuhns allowed Kuhns to cross the plate and put Union up five.  But Vassar came roaring back in the bottom of the first, scoring five runs to tie the game. The runs kept coming for the Brewers, scoring five more times in the second and four more times in the third to take a 14-5 lead.

Toy and fellow senior Joey Palko both drove in runs in the fourth inning to cut into Vassar's lead, but Vassar scored two more in the bottom of the fourth to maintain its nine-run lead. The Dutchmen's last run of the game came on a sacrifice fly by junior Brody Dupuis in the seventh.

Union pitchers combined to allow 16 runs on 19 hits over seven innings. Sophomore Kevin Dewing (0-1) got the start and took the loss, allowing five runs and four hits.

Game 2: Vassar 3, Union 2

The Union pitching tightened up considerably in the second game, holding Vassar to just three runs, but the offense managed just two runs of its own in the 3-2 loss.

The first six innings featured matching zeroes put up by Union first-year Bryce Fournier and Vassar's Matt McGannon, as Fournier allowed just two hits and McGannon allowed only four headed into the seventh. Chaimowitz broke the stalemate in the seventh, stealing home on a Kuhns walk to put Union on the board.

Vassar countered in the bottom of the 7th with a run of their own to tie the score at one apiece. Palko put Union up by one run with two innings to go with an RBI single that scored Koch with the team's second run, but Vassar came right back in the bottom of the eighth, scoring two runs on an Andrew Kanellis two-run double that put the Brewers up by one.

The Dutchmen got the tying run in scoring position with one out in the ninth; however, the visitors could not get the big hit to suffer the loss and the sweep.

Fournier received a non-decision despite an excellent outing, striking out four and allowing just one run and four hits in 6.1 innings. Sophomore Jason Goldblum (0-2) took the loss despite allowing just one hit and striking out two in 1.2 innings.

Union will finish the regular season with a four-game series against Bard College next weekend, starting off on Saturday with two games in Annandale-on-Hudson.
