Women's Basketball Drops CAA Tilt at William & Mary to Split Weekend Series - Drexel Dragons

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The Drexel University women's basketball team (6-3, 3-1 CAA) fell to the William & Mary Tribe (5-6, 2-4 CAA) on Sunday afternoon in Williamsburg, Va. by a final of 69-53 to split the weekend conference road series.
 
HIGHLIGHTS
* William & Mary's 16-2 run to start the second quarter proved to be the difference in the game as the Tribe held a double-digit lead for the final two quarters.
* W&M shot .491 percent on the day, the only time a Drexel opponent managed above .430 on the year.
* Senior Hannah Nihill finished with a team-high 18 points along with six rebounds, three assists and two steals. She was 7-of-15 from the field and 4-of-7 from deep. Her four treys came as a career high.
* Redshirt sophomore transfer Tori Hyduke recorded double figures for her first time as a Dragon. She totaled 11 points with three three-pointers, three rebounds and an assist.
* Junior Kate Connolly scored eight points and finished with a career- and game-high four blocks. Her previous career high of three blocks was set on Wednesday at La Salle as she finished with eight on the three-game week.
* Senior Mariah Leonard followed up Saturday's career-high 17-point, 11-rebound double-double effort with eight points and seven boards, tied for a team high.
* Junior Maura Hendrixson had a team-high five assists while contributing a trey, two rebounds, two blocks and one steal.
* Junior Keishana Washington tied for a team-high seven rebounds and totaled a game-high three steals.
* William & Mary's #1 Sydney Wagner scored a game-high 22 points followed by #1 Bre Bellamy (19) and #21 Bailey Eichner (13) combined for 54 of the Tribes' 69-point total. Eichener nearly had a triple-double with 13 rebounds and eight assists.
 
GAMEPLAY
Q1 /
Drexel struggled early, starting 0-of-4 from the floor but only trailing 6-2 with 4:56 to play in the opening period. Leonard and Nihill scored on easy layups before Hyduke's three-pointer gave the Dragons a 9-8 lead, their first of the game. Hyduke and Hendrixson later connected on back-to-back treys with under a minute to play as DU held a 15-13 lead after 10 minutes. Drexel made 4-of-5 attempts to finish the quarter.

W&M started the second on a 7-0 run as the Tribes' Sydney Wagner quickly reached double figures with 11 of W&M's first 20 points. A subsequent 9-0 run put W&M up 29-17 with 4:19 to play as Drexel called a timeout. DU tried to chip away at that 12-point edge in the final four minutes. Hyduke hit her third three of the game to lead the Dragons with nine points as the half as Drexel finished the quarter by making four of its last five shots. But W&M matched them as the score remained in the Tribes' favor after two quarters, 38-26. The Tribes' Bre Bellamy led all scorers with 14 at halftime behind 6-of-8 shooting.

The lowest scoring period, both teams had trouble scoring in the third quarter. Nihill scored the first eight points of the half for Drexel as she reached double figures for the game. The Dragons missed its last six field goals and only managed one point over the final three and a half minutes. William & Mary extended its lead to 15 at 50-35 after three quarters of action.

Leonard made an early layup but then the Dragons missed their next six shots as the Tribe extended their lead to a game-high 20 with 6:47 to play following a timeout. DU went on an 8-0 run out of the break that started with a steal on the full-court press. Nihill knocked down another three before Leonard converted a three-point play to get DU within 12 with 5:41 on the clock, 58-46. 12 points was the closest the Dragons would get. Nihill connected on her career-best fourth trey late in the contest. The Tribe won 69-53.
 
BY THE NUMBERS
* Drexel's two lowest offensive outputs, 46 at Villanova on Dec. 13 and 53 at W&M on Sunday, represent the Dragons' only two losses on the year.
* W&M dominated points in the paint, 34-18.
* Drexel shot 32.8% (20-of-61) from the floor, 29.6% (8-of-27) from three-point range and 55.6% (5-of-9) from the foul line.
* William & Mary shot 49.1% (27-of-55) from the field, 38.1% (8-of-21) from beyond the arc and 53.8% (7-of-13) from the free-throw line.

Drexel is scheduled to host Elon next weekend at the DAC for a pair of CAA contests.
